One of my past posts was titled ‘Wednesday Is The New Friday’, not even realising it would turn into an actual trend for me. I found myself out again on a Wednesday, a chilly evening down near Southwark.
Meeting the lovely Lucy from Diamond In The Ashes. I first met Lucy at Zomato’s Pond Street blogger event, but it was so long ago we definitely felt the need to meet up again and have a good catch up!
Arriving at one of Mark Hixter’s restaurants, the sign outside glowing like one of those posh bars in the city or american diners on the highway. I didn’t know what to expect, as I forgot to google it. I had enough trust in Lucy’s judgement that I let her lead the way tonight…
I was greeted by the lady in her entirety, looking stunning as always. Poised and sophisticatedly perched on a stool by the bar awaiting my presence. Whilst waiting for our table reservations, we decided to indulge in a cocktail (even though it was a school night for Lucy, us rebels…). Without a doubt, I jumped straight into this one, I went for the ‘Twitter and Bisted’. The sound of pink grapefruit juice and prosecco sold me on the spot. Lucy had an off the menu cocktail, which consisted of squeezed grapefruit and gin.
Before we knew it, our 7pm table reservations were ready. We popped on over and had another long needed natter. To the point where two waitresses and a waiter came up to take our order and we had to confess we had not even looked at the menu yet! Oooops.
After some time, we decided to order starters and drinks first whilst we pondered over the main courses. We ordered the a lovely bottle of french Côtes du Rhône red wine to accompany our meal. The starters we decided on were Cock ‘n’ Bull croquettes, which was a blend of chicken and ox cheek mixed with mash potato, rolled in breadcrumbs and fried croquette style.
Along with the ‘Holy fucked chicken wings’, we keenly asked the waitress, why the name? Apparently the hot sauce served with chicken wings used to get everyone to scream “holy f*ck” after dipping their food in it. To prevent us doing so, they blended the hot sauce with some mayonnaise to make it less spicy.
After polishing off our delicious starters, we were ready for our main course. We both ordered the Hixter Chateau Steak which was accompanied with a watercress and shallot salad and chips. Being extra greedy after hovering over the sides section, we decided to get some salt and vinegar onion rings to share too.
I had my steak well done but Lucy went for medium. The steak was so well cooked, not a single gram of fat either. Pure, succulent, juicy and extremely tender beef. My mouth may or may not be watering… It was so delicious!
Lucy had been here before and desperately advised me to go and check out the toilets whilst we were here. All I can say was there were definitely ‘quirky’….
After a short break from food we were ready to check out the desserts menu. I bet you’re all thinking, how are they still able to eat dessert after all that?! Well… there was no way we were going to leave without trying the Credit Crunch Ice-cream. Vanilla ice-cream, with chocolate shavings, honey comb pieces accompanied with a small pot of warm chocolate sauce. Mmmmm!
Can I hear some ooo’s and ahhhhh’s? It was positively divine! Lucy was going to go for one scoop at first, but we both settled on two each. After we devoured it, she commented “I am so glad I got two!” – as was I!
A night full of lots of laughter, good food, great service and awesome company, our evening at Hixter Bankside came to an end. I definitely need more Wednesday night’s like this for sure!
