A Letter To Myself

When I was a kid, Disney Channel was my favourite channel to watch. I was able to sit there all day long watching programme after programme, especially those days when you were home sick from school. I remember watching a movie on there, where one of the characters wrote a letter to their future self as a project and then it was buried under the ground, was then dug up all those years later. 

Ever since that day, I have always wanted to write a letter to myself in the future, explaining my current situation and what I was doing at present in life. There would be nothing more surreal like opening a ten year old letter from a 19, soon to be 20 year old Aftab remembering all the things that were going on back then. Comparing your life then to your life when reading the letter.  The whole point of it is just to see how times change over time – to see if your personal goals were ever achieved. My plan is to make it as personal as possible as it would be strictly for my eyes only and not to be opened by anyone else. 

For me, the thought of it being ten years old is enough for me to get motivated in writing this letter. The fact that I would have to challenge and give myself the task to look after this letter for the next decade of my life would be a major commitment in itself. 

Think of it this way, if somebody asked you to tell them about your character as a teenager? or when you were in your university days, would you be able to remember the details? The letter is a perfect representation, you don’t have to use your memory to back track to vivid memories of your ‘younger days’ where it may not even be accurate. 

Therefore I have set myself the task to write this letter, keep it and open it on the date I have set.  I am genuinely so excited about this little project,  but I know I will appreciate it in the years to come.
